Why Choose a Board-Certified Orthodontist?

December 5, 2024

We’re proud to announce that our very own orthodontist, Dr. Wiewiora, has recently earned her board certification!

Many people believe that all orthodontists are board-certified, but this isn’t the case. In fact, as of January 18, only about 33 percent of orthodontists are certified by the American Board of Orthodontics.

A board certification is undeniably an incredible achievement, but what exactly does it take to become certified? Here’s what you need to know:

What is an ABO Board Certification?

ABO (American Board of Orthodontics) certification is a voluntary credential that represents an orthodontist’s personal and public commitment to the standards of specialty practice and lifelong learning. The ABO Certification process requires the completion of peer-developed, externally validated written and clinical examinations.

A board certified orthodontist has reached this level of achievement by pursuing additional voluntary education and ongoing self-assessment. The American Board of Orthodontics is the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists.

An board certified orthodontist has not just completely prepared as a dentist, including having finished an graduate program in dentistry to get their DDS or DMD (Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine), however they have likewise done a residency at a Commission of Dental Accreditation (CDA) affirmed orthodontic program for an extra 2-3 years to be prepared explicitly in orthodontics and dentofacial muscular health. Also, a board certified orthodontist must renew their certification every 10 years.

Orthodontists do more than straighten teeth. Orthodontists understand the intricacies of growth development and facial structure. Orthodontists consider the alignment on the jaw and the bite, not just the movement of teeth.

Some dentists offer orthodontic treatment plans, yet they don’t have the extensive education and training that an orthodontist does.

Although many Dentists offer braces, only 5% of Dentists are Orthodontists, and only 1% have completed their board certification exams to become a board-certified orthodontist.

Board certified orthodontists are remarkably qualified in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of orthodontic problems. They’re devoted to creating beautiful smiles with exceptional attention-to-detail.
