Does My Teen Need Braces?

Teens of all ages can be eligible for braces, but the most common age for teens to get braces is between 10 to 14 years old. A dentist will usually make a recommendation for your teen to see an orthodontist once oral issues concerning the straightness of teeth and alignment of the jaw begin to show. Braces for teens can correct crooked, overlapping, or overcrowded teeth.

Additional orthodontic care aside from, but still including, braces is also often needed to correct a malocclusion, which is a difference in size between the upper jaw and lower jaw. Malocclusions can cause an overbite or an underbite. Breathing problems such as mouth breathing and snoring can also sometimes be fixed with the help of braces.

Dr. Wiewiora and Dr. Dunn specialize in orthodontic treatment for all ages, and they will take a comprehensive approach to your teen’s individual needs. Braces are just one part of full orthodontic care offered at Wiewiora & Dunn Orthodontics. Types of braces for teens

Wiewiora & Dunn Orthodontics provides metal, clear ceramic, and platinum gold braces

If your teen needs braces, there are many options available. Each type of braces are equally as strong and as effective as the others. Clear ceramic braces and platinum gold braces work exactly the same as metal braces for your teen, but they offer different visual appearances. Clear ceramic braces blend in with the teeth more, and platinum gold braces can be an alternative for teens with allergies to certain types of metal such as nickel.

If your teen doesn’t want the look of braces, Invisalign may also be an option. Invisalign are clear aligners that can straighten teeth like braces. However, not all teens may be a candidate for Invisalign depending on their unique oral situation. Invisalign also requires more diligent care on the part of your teen to keep aligners clean and worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day.

No matter what type of braces and orthodontic treatment your teen may need, it is important to be patient, compassionate, and understanding during the process. Be encouraging of your teen’s good habits for taking care of braces, other oral appliances, and teeth. Remember to keep meal times and snacks braces-friendly, as well. Most important of all, make sure your teen feel like they can voice any discomfort they may be experiencing, and make sure to openly discuss with them the expectations of braces and their overall orthodontic treatment.

A family orthodontic insurance plan can cover part of the cost of braces for teens. We accept many HMO and PPO dental insurance plans at Wiewiora & Dunn. Contact us today to schedule an appointment for your teen.
