What Happens at Your Orthodontic Exam? 3 Things to Expect

April 20, 2024

Your first visit to one of our offices, also known as your orthodontic exam or initial consultation, is an exciting visit! We’ll familiarize you with our Longwood or Lake Mary office and ensure that you feel comfortable, informed, and excited to transform your smile.

So what exactly happens at your orthodontic exam? Here are 3 things you can expect to experience at your orthodontic exam!

1. Your orthodontist will examine your current smile!

When you visit us for an orthodontic exam, either Dr. Wiewiora or Dr. Dunn will be your orthodontist. You’ll meet your orthodontist and get to know a little bit about each other!

Your orthodontist will perform a visual exam of your smile, then take some diagnostic x-rays and photos to gain the full picture of your teeth, gums and jaw bones. Next up are your digital impressions! We’ll use our iTero® Element™ scanner to take accurate and precise digital impressions of your mouth, without the discomfort and messiness of traditional impressions.

We’ll use all of this information, from your visual exam, x-rays and digital impressions, to create your personalized treatment plan!

2. You’ll choose a treatment!

At your orthodontic exam, we’ll help you explore your treatment options so you can choose the best one for you! Your orthodontist will discuss the pros and cons of braces, Invisalign®, and/or any appliances that may help you achieve your ideal smile.

After Dr. Wiewiora or Dr. Dunn examines your smile, your orthodontist will determine whether a full treatment of braces or Invisalign is best for your case, or if an appliance would be more efficient first.

The best treatment option for you will depend on a few factors, including your specific condition, the severity of your condition, your age, and of course, your preferences. We’ll listen to your concerns and talk about your lifestyle to help you decide between braces or Invisalign.

If you’re interested in braces, we offer three different kinds! Choose from metal braces, gold braces, and clear ceramic braces.

3. We’ll create a payment plan that suits your needs.

We’ll talk finances too. Before you start treatment, you’ll sit down with one of our team members to discuss the cost of treatment. We’ll present our financial options to you and discuss our 0%-interest in-house financing options, as well as outside financing with CareCredit or LendingClub. If one of your family members has already started or completed treatment with us, you’ll receive a treatment discount!

The cost of your treatment will depend on a few things, including the length of your treatment plan and the type of treatment required. From here, we’ll also calculate your dental insurance benefit if you have insurance! We accept most HMO and PPO dental insurance plans, and we’re proud to offer discounts for patients using Medicaid.

You’ll hear all of this at your orthodontic exam too, of course.

Can I choose a virtual consultation?

Yes you can! Although, it’s important to know that your virtual consultation cannot take the place of your in-person exam. We still need to take x-rays, photos, and digital impressions of your smile, in-person, to create your personalized treatment plan.

With your virtual consultation, we’ll be able to tell you if you’re a good candidate for orthodontics; we’ll answer any questions you have about treatment, and we’ll give you a treatment cost estimate – all from the comfort of your home!

Once you visit us for your orthodontic exam, you’ll be ready to get started.
